Selling Your Car

Should I sell my car privately or to a dealer?

A private sale usually produces a higher gross number. Selling to a dealer produces a faster, cleaner one. Rocky’s Ultimate Garage in West Palm Beach reviews your VIN and photos within 24 hours, makes an offer, charges zero dealer fees, and pays within 48 hours of pickup. If your time, your safety and your certainty are worth more than the spread, sell to a dealer.

Dealer fees at Rocky’s Ultimate Garage: none, on any vehicle bought or sold

Doc and prep fees commonly charged elsewhere: $500 to $2,000 and up

Offer turnaround: Rocky reviews the VIN and photos within 24 hours

Payment: within 48 hours of pickup

Time in the building: in and out under 90 minutes

Appraisal cost: free

What does selling privately actually cost you?

Time and risk. You write the listing, shoot the photos, answer every message, filter out the people who were never buying, absorb the no-shows, ride along on test drives with strangers, verify the payment yourself, and handle the title transfer. None of that work shows up on the sale price. All of it comes out of your calendar.

The bigger gross number is real. So is the fact that you earn it hour by hour.

Five costs sellers underestimate:

  • Listing and re-listing. Photos, description, pricing, then bumping the ad every week the car sits unsold.

  • Screening. On a high-value car, most messages are curiosity, lowballs, or a trade offer you did not ask for.

  • No-shows. Someone confirms Saturday at ten and never arrives. You still cleared your Saturday.

  • Test drives. You are handing keys to a person you met online, then riding in the passenger seat while they find out where the brakes are.

  • Payment. On a $150,000 car the payment is the whole negotiation. Meet at the buyer’s bank, watch the funds move, and never sign a title against anything you cannot verify in person.

Private sale versus dealer sale, side by side

The private route wins on gross. The dealer route wins on speed, certainty, and how much of your life the sale consumes.

What is the honest downside of selling to a dealer?

You net less. A dealer buys below retail because the dealer absorbs everything you just handed off: reconditioning, photography, marketing, floor space, the wait, and the risk that the market moves before the car sells. That gap is what speed costs, and plenty of owners should not pay it.

There is a second limit. No dealer buys every car. Rocky’s Ultimate Garage stocks exotic and luxury inventory, so a well-kept commuter is a private-sale car by default, which is a question of who the buyers are, not what the car is worth.

Who should sell privately, and who should not

Both routes are legitimate. Sell privately when the car is mainstream and your time is cheap. Sell to a dealer when the car is exotic, the calendar is tight, or you would rather not put strangers in the driver’s seat.

Sell privately if

  • Your car is under $40,000, or a mainstream model that exotic dealers do not stock.

  • You have time, patience, and a safe place to meet buyers.

  • You already know the model’s market and can price it without guessing.

  • You genuinely enjoy the process. Some people do, and they should keep doing it.

Sell to a dealer if

  • You want the car gone this week and the money in the account.

  • The car is a Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, McLaren, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, a high-end luxury SUV, a classic at $75,000 and up, or a collector truck.

  • You do not want strangers driving it.

  • You are buying the next car and would rather run one clean transaction than two open ones.

  • You are out of state, out of time, or selling on someone else’s behalf.

How selling a car to Rocky’s Ultimate Garage works

Five steps. Submit the online quote form with the VIN and photos, Rocky reviews it within 24 hours, an offer comes back, the car is dropped off or picked up, and payment lands within 48 hours of pickup. Appraisals are free, and there are no dealer fees on either side of a deal.

Pickup runs on enclosed white-glove transport with a push-button dolly, so the car is never driven on or off the trailer. On a lowered car with a splitter, that is the point.

Rocky’s Ultimate Garage charges zero dealer fees on any vehicle bought or sold, and pays sellers within 48 hours of pickup.

Consignment is offered too. It sits between the two routes, since the car sells through the shop instead of out of your driveway. Terms are not published here, so ask on the phone at (561) 318-8346.

What Rocky’s Ultimate Garage buys, and what it does not

The buy box is narrow on purpose: exotics, high-end luxury, collector metal. If your car is in the right-hand column below, a private listing or a franchise dealer that already stocks the model will serve you better.

Bought

Not bought

Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, McLaren

BMW 3-series

Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin

Daily-driver Audis

High-end luxury SUVs: Urus, DBX, Cullinan, G-Wagon tier

Econoboxes

Classics at $75,000 and up, collector trucks

Anything under $40,000

Free appraisals apply either way. An appraisal that ends in "you will do better selling this one yourself" is still a real answer.

Common questions

Do I get more money selling a car privately or to a dealer? Private sales usually produce a higher gross price, because the seller is selling at retail. Selling to a dealer produces a lower number faster and with far less work. Rocky’s Ultimate Garage in West Palm Beach charges zero dealer fees, so an offer is not reduced by paperwork or prep charges.

How long does it take to sell a car to Rocky’s Ultimate Garage? The sell-us process starts with an online quote form that takes the VIN and photos. Rocky reviews the submission within 24 hours and makes an offer. After drop-off or pickup at 2239 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd in West Palm Beach, payment follows within 48 hours of pickup.

Are there fees when selling a car to Rocky’s Ultimate Garage? No. Rocky’s Ultimate Garage charges zero dealer fees on any vehicle bought or sold, and appraisals are free. Doc and prep fees elsewhere commonly run $500 to $2,000 and up, money that comes off a seller’s number or gets added to a buyer’s total at signing.

Is it safe to let a private buyer test drive my car? Test drives are the riskiest step in a private sale, because the seller is handing keys to a stranger and riding along. Common precautions include checking a license, meeting in a public place in daylight, and never letting anyone drive alone. Selling to a dealer removes the step.

What if a car is worth less than $40,000? Rocky’s Ultimate Garage buys exotic and luxury vehicles, and does not buy cars under $40,000, mainstream sedans such as a BMW 3-series, or daily-driver Audis. Owners of those vehicles are usually better served by a private listing or by a franchise dealer that already stocks the model.
