How do you fill in the title transfer section?
On a Florida paper title the transfer section sits on the reverse. Print the buyer’s full name and address exactly as it will be titled, enter the selling price and the odometer reading, date it, then sign the name printed on the front. One clean pass, no corrections.
Scratch-outs and correction fluid can void a Florida title and force a duplicate application. Made a mistake? Ask a county tax collector office how to fix it.
Photograph both sides once everyone has signed. And never hand over an open title, one you signed with the buyer’s section left blank. Until someone fills it in, the state record still points at you.
What if your title is electronic?
Plenty of Florida titles are held electronically by FLHSMV, so there is no paper in your file cabinet. Two routes: request a paper title and wait for it, or complete the transfer in person at a county tax collector or license plate agent office. Sort that out before you set a pickup date.

Bill of sale or notice of sale: which do you need?

The bill of sale is usually optional once the title transfer section is completed properly. Write one anyway and keep a signed copy. If a dispute surfaces six months later, that copy is the argument.
The notice of sale is the one people skip. Until the buyer applies for a new title, the state record still shows you, and tolls, red light cameras, parking tickets and abandoned-vehicle notices reach the registered owner first. File it the day the car goes.
Know the limit. A notice of sale does not transfer ownership. Only the buyer’s title application does, and Florida gives the buyer a limited window, commonly cited as 30 days, before late fees. Confirm the current rule at flhsmv.gov.
What if there is still a loan on the car?
Then the lien has to be satisfied and released before the title can move. Get a written payoff quote from your lender, confirm how the lender releases the lien in Florida’s electronic system, and confirm how long that takes. Do it before you agree to a delivery date.
This is where private sales stall. Most private buyers will not hand over funds while a bank holds the title, and most sellers cannot clear the loan until the buyer’s money arrives. Meeting at a bank branch is the common workaround.
Dealer or private party, ask how the payoff gets handled and get it in writing before the car moves.
Who keeps the license plate in Florida?
You do. Florida registers a plate to the owner rather than to the vehicle, so it comes off before the buyer drives away. From there you either transfer it to another vehicle you own or surrender it to FLHSMV and keep the receipt. A buyer who insists the plate stays is mistaken.
Cancel the insurance last
Order matters. Florida expects continuous coverage on a vehicle that still carries an active Florida registration. Cancel the policy while the plate is still active in your name and you can end up with a suspended driver license and reinstatement fees. Handle the plate first, then call the insurer.
