What does real service history look like on an exotic?
Dated invoices with mileage and the name of the shop that did the work. A folder beats a verbal summary. On items that come due by calendar rather than by miles, a 9,000 mile car that sat for four years can owe more work than one that gets driven.
Call the shop on the invoice with the VIN and ask what it actually did. A thin file is not proof of neglect, but you are buying the risk, so price it in.
How do you read the paint, and does a repaint matter?
A depth gauge reads coating thickness in microns, panel by panel, and the number on its own proves little. Variance is the signal: one door far heavier than the door beside it usually means filler, a respray, or years of correction. Map the whole car, both sides and the roof.
A repaint is not a deal breaker. Bumpers get resprayed on cars that cover real miles. What matters is whether it was disclosed and how well it was done: overspray on trim, mismatched texture, tape lines in the jambs.
Thin paint limits you later. Correction on the Rupes system runs one, two or three stages and 5 to 30 hours, and clear coat does not grow back.
Is paint protection film already on the car a plus?
Sometimes. Documented film fitted well protects what is underneath and carries value. Film with no paperwork, lifting edges or staining tells you little, and it can sit over a repair you would rather see.

Clutch
Single-clutch automated manuals, the paddle gearboxes of the 2000s that came before dual-clutch, wear a clutch the way a manual does, and traffic eats them. Ask for a printed wear reading from marque diagnostics, then ask how the car was driven. The same number means different things on a highway car and a city car.
Convertible top
Cycle it fully three times, cold and warm. Listen to the pump, then check the headliner, the seals, the trunk floor and the carpet for damp or staining.
Electronics

Does the factory warranty transfer, and what does Carfax miss?
Transfer depends on the manufacturer, on the specific coverage, and sometimes on paperwork filed inside a window. Do not take the seller’s word for it. Give the VIN to a franchise dealer for that marque and ask them to read the coverage and expiry off the system.
Carfax reports what somebody reported. Cash repairs at an independent shop and claims never filed can be missing, so a clean report is not proof of a clean car. A salt-state car earns a longer look underneath than a Florida car.

Do you actually need a pre-purchase inspection?

Ask for the car on a lift, a leak check, a diagnostic scan including pending codes, a road test at temperature, and photos of all four corners. Out of the area? Buy the inspection before you pay for transport.
An inspection is a snapshot of one day. It does not predict next month and it does not set the value. A seller who will not allow one has answered the question.
