In Florida, front side windows must let in more than 28 percent of visible light. On sedans, back side windows and the rear window must allow more than 15 percent. On SUVs and vans, everything behind the front doors can go darker, to more than 6 percent. The windshield may only carry a non-reflective strip above the AS-1 line.
Darkness and heat rejection are separate things. We install XPEL Prime XR Plus, a ceramic tint that blocks up to 98 percent of infrared heat without going darker than the law allows. A legal ceramic film keeps a cabin cooler than an illegal dyed one.
Medical exemptions
Florida grants tint exemptions for medical conditions that require reduced light exposure, with a form signed by a physician and carried in the vehicle.
Is it actually enforced?
Enforcement in Palm Beach County is real but uneven. The ticket is not the main cost anyway. Illegal tint complicates resale, inspections and insurance claims, and it usually has to come off eventually.
